As part of a UNI campaign to meet the growing need for student scholarships, two College of Natural Sciences alumni will establish an endowed scholarship for students who are preparing for a career teaching middle school general science or biology. The Myrna and Gary Floyd Endowed Scholarship Fund will annually provide full tuition several times over.
Gary Floyd, '62, is Dean Emeritus of the College of Biological Sciences at Ohio State University; Myrna Spurling Floyd, '63, is a recently retired junior high school science teacher. The Floyds made a provision in their estate plan to establish the scholarship.
"Because UNI had taught them the importance of great teaching and led them to dedicate their lives to the teaching profession, Gary and Myrna wanted to support future generations of students in science education," says Amy Edgar Davis, CNS director of development. "Through this scholarship, their dedication to science education will live on for years to come."
The endowment campaign for student scholarships, called Students First, was launched in the fall of 1998 by the UNI Foundation, with the goal of increasing scholarship endowments by at least $10 million by the year 2000. More than $7 million has already been committed.
Although Students First will benefit students university-wide, campaign gifts may be directed to specific parts of the University. "After meeting remarkable alumni and friends of the College of Natural Sciences," adds Davis, "I have no doubt that the College will enjoy further success in the Students First campaign and increased support in years to come."
