As part of the "Students First" campaign to raise $75 million for UNI, naming opportunities are available in both the Chemistry and Biology areas in the new addition of McCollum Science Hall, according to Heather Bremer-Miller, director of development for the colleges of Natural Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The addition, which will nearly double the size of McCollum and includes state-of-the-art research facilities, laboratories and classrooms, is funded by a $16.9 million appropriation by the Iowa Legislature.  However, UNI is turning to private sources of support to secure scientific instrumentation for the facility.  Contracts for the addition were awarded in the fall in anticipation of construction beginning in winter.

"Naming opportunities are available for gifts of $10,000 to $385,000," Bremer-Miller said.  Naming highlights in the Biology Department include the Cancer Biology Lab, the Anatomy and Physiology Classroom and the Biology Auditorium.  In the Chemistry Department, the Chemistry Lecture Hall, General Chemistry Laboratories and the Chemical Instrumentation Lab are candidates for naming.

Since McCollum Science Hall opened in 1968, the number of biology majors has increased by more than 500% and chemistry majors by 250%.  With 648 students, biology is now the third largest major on campus.

Anyone interested in making a contribution to the instrumentation in the McCollum Science Hall expansion should contact Heather Bremer-Miller in the UNI Foundation at 1-800-782-9522.
