Graduate Research Awards for Student Projects (GRASP)

 

Purpose

 

The GRASP awards support research activities for graduate students in the College of Natural Sciences. The awards, in amounts up to $750, are specifically for costs related to research projects that are part of the student's degree program. All awards must be expended by June 30, 2009.

 

Eligibility and selection criteria

 

Awards will be based upon the scientific merits of the proposed project.  The award is open to any graduate student with regular degree status in the College of Natural Sciences. To be eligible, the student’s graduate adviser must verify the intended use of the monies.  A student is eligible for support of one GRASP award per academic year. At most, only two awards will be given to a student.

 

       Eligible costs:

  • Computer software and hardware, laboratory or field research supplies
  • Relevant office costs (mailing, photocopying), library services
  • Travel costs directly related to research activities
  • External laboratory fees/costs

       Ineligible costs:

  • Student wages, academic course fees
  • Costs related to presentation of results (travel, thesis, publishing)

Submission guidelines

Application forms for the fall 2008 semester are available from the CNS Dean's Office, departmental offices, and the CNS Web site. Applications are due by September 19, 2008, and must be submitted to the Associate Dean, College of Natural Sciences, 50 BRC, 0181. 

 

Applications must include the following:

  • Cover sheet (Please use the form provided.)
  • A narrative written entirely by the student outlining the research project (2-page maximum, 12 pt Times New Roman/Courier font, 1-inch margins all around). The narrative should address the following:

       A description of the project
       Student's academic and/or research background that ties directly to the project
       How the project will contribute to the student's overall education at UNI
       How the results of the project will be disseminated (conference, publication, etc.)

    Students may be contacted to clarify any aspects of the narrative that are unclear.

  • A one-page budget that includes costs per item, total number of items, total project costs, and a justification of any extraordinary items in the budget (Please use the budget form provided or a document in similar format.)
