Clear Lake Teachers Workshop

August 1-3, 2002
Collaboration with AEA 2 (Phyllis Anderson)
and
The Clear Project (David Knoll)
Clear Lake
is the third largest lake in the state of Iowa. It is a natural lake formed by
the glaciers that covered much of Iowa in the past. The lake is now used
intensively for recreation. As the water quality deteriorates due to human
activity in the watershed, the community has become very concerned. The UNI Iowa
Lakes Project was invited by Phyllis Anderson of AEA 2 to conduct a water
quality workshop for a group of teachers from the surrounding area.
The workshop took place on August
1st and 2nd, 2002. Teachers experienced informal science education lessons from
the UNI curriculum. Excellent demonstrations were also given by the Iowa DNR and
David Knoll of The Clear Project. The teachers earning graduate credit at UNI
returned Saturday morning August 3rd to present lessons at an open house
community workshop. The teachers appreciated the opportunity to experience
classes that modeled both the content and teaching standards of the National
Science Education Standards.
