Information about Sigma Xi

Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 as an honor society for scientists and engineers. Its goals are to foster worldwide interactions among science, technology, and society: to encourage appreciation and support of original work in science and technology; and to honor scientific accomplishments.

Today, Sigma Xi is a society of about 95,000 scientists and engineers. There are more than 500 chapters and clubs at colleges and universities, government laboratories, and industrial research centers. The UNI chapter of Sigma Xi was established in 1986 and currently has 130 members representing all the colleges on this campus

Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation and is conferred upon those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievement in scientific research through publications, patents, books, written reports, and other means. Throughout its history, more than 150 Sigma Xi members have received the Nobel Prize. To become a member, please contact any current member or one of the officers.
