Summer Migration Plans

Please see the list below of computer-related services that will be migrated this summer. These are the services that are changing that could have some impact on you as users. You can click a link of the server/service to get more information on the migration and current status.

User Share

We will be migrating the "users" share from the current server (cns-vms2) to a new server (cns-fs2).  Please note the name change.  The new server is a virtual server, so this name should never have to change again.  All PCs that connect to this via the domain DO NOT have to change anything.  For the computers that are not on the domain or connect to the share from a Mac, then you will need to update some information.  Please use the following links accordingly based on your operating system.  The old server's name is "cns-vms2.ad.uni.edu" and the new server/share is "cns-fs2.ad.uni.edu\users$"

Departmental Share

We will be migrating the "departmental" share from the current server (cns-vms1) to a new server (cns-fs2).  The new server is a virtual server, so this name should never have to change again.  All PCs that connect to this via the domain DO NOT have to change anything.  For the computers that are not on the domain or connect to the share from a Mac, then you will need to update some information.  Please use the following links accordingly pending your operating system.  The old server's name is "cns-vms1.ad.uni.edu" and the new server is "cns-fs2.ad.uni.edu\departmental$"

student.cs

The Computer Science and Physics departments have agreed to migrate to a single server this summer.  The server will also be reconfigured to run the latest version of the operating system and stable packages.  If all goes as planned, the users shouldn't notice any downtime or difference except for the time it takes to reinstall the operating system.

faculty.cns

We will be migrating faculty.cns to a virtual server this summer.  It will also get the latest version of the operating system.  The downtime should be very minimal and users shouldn't see any changes - except better uptime in the long run!  We plan on configuring everything else to be the same, and downtime shouldn't be more than a few minutes.

Lab Rotation

This summer we will be installing 70+ computers in ITC19 and ITC24. This is part of the 4-year lab rotation for CNS. This will free up ~70 four year-old machines, which can then be handed down for other uses - student use gets priority. We are asking you to have a one-in-one-out type mindset if possible. In other words, we'll give you a computer, but it would be great if you have a computer to send to auction. That way we do not keep around old computers that are not really being used. If you are interested in obtaining one of these computers for your lab or office, you need to contact your CNS Computer Advisory Committee representative. If that person is not available this summer, provide information to your department head.

ITS Hand-me-downs

ITS was generous to CNS as we received over 60 three to four year-old computers to be used in various student and research labs. As we are notified from ITS, we will assist in getting these setup for anyone in CNS. FYI, we (CNS Support) do not move the machines from ITS' facilities.

Printers

Wasteful printing has always been a concern in CNS and on campus.  Students have the right to print black/white copies of anything related to homework at no extra charge.  That being said, there are some instances where an entire book is printed and wastes most of a toner in a laser printer.  Moving some of our lab printers to be hosted on ITS' server will allow us to monitor printers a little more.  For instance, ITS sends out an email to users who have printed thousands of pages in a given month.  Some departments have asked for software to do the same, so we are teaming up with ITS to see how we can share this resource.

Wireless Changes

In August, ITS will be removing the "UNI-Wireless" name (SSID) from available wireless connections.  This is to save confusion on which one to connect to.  This means, all University owned computers connecting to wireless will need to be reconfigured.  If the computer is on the domain, no changes will have to be made by the user.  CNS has over 450 computers to manually update so we may need your help making some changes if you can.  Please follow the instructions linked below.  If you have questions or need help with these settings, please email manager@cns.uni.edu with a day and time that will work to assist you.  IMPORTANT: these changes can't be made until ITS makes the changes in August.
