CNS Faculty Service Inventory

Introduction

This document contains a listing of the basic services that are provided by the College of Natural Science System Administration to the faculty and staff of the college. This by no means is a complete list of all services that are available. Nor does this list limit the extension or growth of the available services. This document was written as an introduction to outline a basic list of services a faculty or staff member should expect to receive through the CNS. If there is a question as to the availability of a service please contact manager@cns.uni.edu.
Email Services
Terminal Mutt and Pine are available through an SSH session to the faculty server.
Webmail A web-based email client which will work with any SSL-enabled web browser is available at https://faculty.cns.uni.edu/webmail/
IMAP/POP We highly recommend using Mozilla Thunderbird. Though other clients such as Outlook and Eudora will work, there will have limited support for them.
Forwarding Email To forward email the user needs to modify the .qmail file in their home directory to contain the email address that they would like to forward their messages to.
Web Publishing Services
Each faculty account is setup to allow them the ability to publish web pages, and create interactive CGI applications. These are accessible through either http://www.cns.uni.edu/~<username>.
Accessing the Home Directory
Shell Each user is able to connect and access their home directory through on interactive shell that can be logged into via SSH or Telnet.
Samba Samba is a service is no longer offered as of 2008-07.
Server Backups
The user data on the servers is backed up on Tuesdays, Fridays, 1st of Month, 15th of Month, and end of semester.
Lab Access
Faculty and staff of CNS are able to login to CNS supported lab machines using their AD-ITS accounts
