College of Natural Sciences Use of Computing Resources Policy

Computing Resources Policies

The College of Natural Sciences requires that all software executed on College of Natural Sciences servers and general use lab workstations be approved by the System Administrator in advance.

The software must be used for academic use or research in accordance with the goals of the University of Northern Iowa. Software that is currently installed on the servers or general use lab workstations for use is pre-approved. Additional software installed or used by a faculty/staff should be reported to the System Administrator. Students desiring to install or execute additional software are required to have the support of a faculty/staff member or recognized University of Northern Iowa organization that is sponsored by a faculty/staff member on campus.

Purpose

The servers and general use labs need to be used by many students across the college. The systems need to function reliably and in a consistent fashion. Software that is run on servers use CPU cycles and deprive them from other users. Therefore, the software using the CPUs need to be in accordance with good use such that it does not generate a negative impact for the other faculty/staff/students using the same resources.

Innocent violations of the policy may include:

  • Leaving software running in infinite loops on the server
  • Using the servers or lab systems to run downloaded software that is not for academic purposes
  • Installing software on the systems without notification to the CNS Systems Administrator
Scope

All faculty/staff/students are subject to this policy.

Compliance with the Policy

Ignorance or circumvention of this policy can result in non-compliance and will result in the following process.

  1. The software will be immediately killed by the System Administrator. The System Administrator will contact the user about the software and inquire the use of such software. The user will be pointed to this policy for questions on appropriate use.
  2. If the user continues in the practice and the software has not been approved, the software will be immediately killed by the System Administrator. The System Administrator will contact the user with a notification that if such practice continues, the account of the user may be revoked for use on the lab stations and the server.
  3. If the user still continues in the practice, the user's account will be locked for a period of 5 business days. The System Administrator will contact the user about the locking of the account and ask for a face to face meeting with the user.
  4. On the fourth offense, the System Administrator will lock the user account indefinitely. The user will be required to have a face to face meeting with the System Administrator and either obtain approval for the software, or insure that the software will no longer be executed. Reinstating the account is left to the discretion of the System Administrator.
To assure compliance, the user must

  • Request the permission to run software that is outside of the scope of a class from the System Administrator by e-mailing manager@cns.uni.edu
  • Respond to the messages from the System Administrator after a first offense to explain the situation and seek software approval
