Wright Hall Lab Reservation Policy

Reservation Policies

A "day" is defined to be a university working day.

A "lab" is defined to be a single room of computers setup for general student usage in Wright Hall. There are two (2) labs in Wright Hall, located in rooms 110 and 112.

The "reserver" is the faculty/staff/groups requiring the use of a lab.

An instructor can make the following types of reservations:

  • An Open Request: an instructor makes this request when s/he does not require all computers in the lab and is willing to allow other students to work there quietly. An Open Request can be made only when 40% of the total computers in the requested lab will be available for non-course use.

  • A Closed Request: an instructor makes this request when s/he wants exclusive use of the lab, permitting only course-enrolled students in the lab.
The College of Natural Sciences requires that any reserver request the reservation with advanced notice as applies:
  • Open Request requires 4 days notice.
  • Closed Request requires 6 days notice.
  • Open or Closed request in which an instructor wants to use software not currently installed in a lab requires 10 days notice
Note: If a request is made before noon on a day, then that day counts towards the advanced notice.

Purpose

Most of the software that is available on the computers located in these areas is limited to these actual computers. Therefore, it is important that students are able to schedule when they will be able to use these labs during open lab hours. It makes it necessary to post schedules 1 week in advance. Therefore, requests need to be made accordingly to inform students.

The small classes that do not require the entire lab sometimes allow others to use the excess computers. It is difficult for a student to know whether this is allowed or not, so they often walk in to be told to leave.

The software in the lab is complicated to install. Therefore, a sufficient lead time is required to get it to function. Furthermore, the CNS Systems Administrator is not fluent in all software packages that are needed by the reserver, so it is the duty of the reserver to test the application of the software prior to the lab reservation.

Innocent violations of the policy may include:
  • Waiting until 3 or fewer days before of lab to schedule the reservation and posting a sign on the door instead of contacting the lab coordinator
  • Using the lab for a small class without considering allowing others in the lab, even if it is not disruptive to the class
  • Installing software on the systems without notification to the CNS Systems Administrator.
  • Allowing students to install software on the systems
  • Requesting assistance from the CNS Systems Administrator or one of the Student Computer Technicians within 2 days of the scheduled lab
Scope

All faculty/staff/groups are subject to this policy. Exceptions will only be made for emergencies related to computer-related problems in the lab.

Compliance with the Policy

Ignorance or circumvention of this policy can result in non-compliance and will result in not allowing the reserver to reserve the lab. To assure compliance, the reserver must:
  • Request the reservation following the above outlined constraints via e-mail to labs@cns.uni.edu or written notice to the lab coordinator
  • Inform the lab coordinator if the reservation is Open or Closed.
  • In the request, the reserver must list the software needed in the lab.
  • Request assistance from the CNS Systems Administrator or a Student Computer Technician with the request for the reservation.
