College-level Scholarships and Awards

 

The following listing is divided into two parts: those scholarships and awards for incoming UNI freshmen and those for ongoing UNI students and students transferring to UNI. Other scholarships, listed on the Financial Aid Directory of Scholarships, are available through the various CNS departments.


INCOMING FRESHMEN

The deadline for online application for each of these scholarships varies by department. Please see the online application for specific deadlines.

CNS Scholarships (formerly Science, Math, and Technology Symposium Scholarships): Each department in the College awards its own CNS Scholarship (for example, CNS Scholarships-Biology). Visit the Financial Aid Directory of Scholarships for information on scholarship amounts and award criteria.

Mathematical, Computational, and Physical Sciences (MCaPs) Scholarships: Awards up to $7000 per year, renewable for four years. For additional information on requirements and eligibility, click here. You can access the application form in a Word or PDF format. (Application for these scholarships must be done separately from the online Common Scholarship Application for UNI Undergraduates.)

Donald and Marguerite McKay Scholarship: Amount varies; approximately $2000 per year for two years. Students who complete the online application for CNS Scholarship-Biology, CNS Scholarship-Earth Science, or CNS Scholarship-Physics will automatically be considered for the McKay Scholarship.


ONGOING UNI STUDENTS AND TRANSFER STUDENTS

The deadline for online application for each of these scholarships is February 15, 2008. Nominees will be notified by departments by February 29, and letters will be sent to winners on March 31.

Louis Begeman Memorial Scholarship: Scholarships of approximately $1000 each. Awarded to an outstanding second-semester junior. Preference given to chemistry or physics majors planning to enroll for graduate work.

Dean's Student Award: $200. Awarded annually to one CNS student (undergraduate or graduate) to recognize superior achievement.

James & Cynthia Kenyon Endowed Scholarship: Approximately $500. Awarded to a Cedar Falls (Iowa) High School graduate with a CNS major, with preference given to a science education major; renewable if satisfactory academic progress is maintained.

C.W. Lantz Scholarship: Academic year scholarships of approximately $1200. Given to a junior or senior majoring in biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, science, or science education; with a 3.0 GPA; and 48 credits completed, with at least 32 from UNI.

Clifford McCollum Scholarship: Approximately $1000. Given to recognize undergraduate student scholarship and service in the College and to acknowledge the potential for future professional development. Applicants must have a major in the College of Natural Sciences, at least a 3.25 GPA, and a minimum of 90 semester hours of credit, at least 45 from UNI.

McKay Study Abroad Scholarship: Approximately $1000 for support for study or research in a foreign country. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the College of Natural Sciences and must provide a departmentally approved program of study or research plan in association with a foreign university.

Dorothy Muzzy Scholarship Loan Program: A loan of up to $1500, depending on the student's need; with an interest rate of 5%; repayment to begin 90 days after graduation. Designed to assist chemistry or physics students in the completion of their undergraduate studies. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit. Selection is based on financial need, scholarly achievement, and potential in the major field.

Students First Scholarship:  One academic-year scholarship of approximately $675.  Applicants must have at least a 3.00 GPA overall.

Irene M. Thompson Scholarship: Approximately $1000. Awarded to a CNS undergraduate or graduate student on the basis of contribution to the total program of the College and his or her department. Need is not necessarily a factor.
