Above is a photograph from August 2017 taken at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. The occasion was a retirement party for the lab chief Jim McMahon (far right). The people in the photograph are the Òold timersÓ from the LDDRD lab (now called MTL).I was at the lab from 1989-1991. It was clearly where I learned about natural products research.Kirk Gustafson (far left), Rich Fuller(red hat) and John Cardellina (not pictured)were the first four natural products chemists in the lab.
Over the past 15 years our research has been in the area of natural products isolation and structure elucidation. Most of our current work has been involved in isolating compounds from native prairie plants. We have had a collaboration with Dr. Kelly Kindscher of the Kansas Biological Survey for the past few years. This collaboration has resulted in the collection and identification of over 75 native plant species that have been shown to have medicinal uses by Native Americans of the Missouri River region. We have collaborations with various labs to bioassay compounds for activity against human tumor cells lines and HIV.We are also trying to develop botanicals as use as preservatives in personal care products.Kindscher, K; Manfredi, K.
